Introduction & Goals

Welcome to the Bachelor of Science program in the Department of Chemistry at Saint Georges University of Beirut (SGUB) where we offer a dynamic and multidisciplinary educational experience tailored to your unique interests and career aspirations. Our program is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of chemistry with an embedded premedical curriculum that prepares you for medical school.  The chemistry program includes three tracks:  (1) An Emphasis on Industrial Chemistry that is geared towards the ever-expanding chemical industries; a Minor in Information Technology (ITEC) that adds essential digital literacy; a Minor in Biology (BIOL) for students interested in Biochemical applications and careers.

Our curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in general and industrial chemistry, ensuring that our graduates possess the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the field. For those on a premedical track, we offer a specialized pathway that prepares you for the rigors of medical school and healthcare professions.

Recognizing the importance of Information Technology in today's world, we also offer opportunities for students to obtain a Minor degree in this field, allowing you to combine your chemistry expertise with digital skills, opening doors to exciting career prospects in tech-driven industries.

Why Study Chemistry at SGUB?

Studying chemistry at SGUB can provide numerous advantages and open up a wide range of opportunities in various domains, including medical studies, graduate studies in Chemistry or Biochemistry,  food chemistry and quality control, dyes chemistry and paints, pharmaceutical industries, cosmetics and perfume industries, environmental chemistry, and petrochemistry or oil and gas. 1- Medical School: Chemistry is a fundamental subject for premedical students as it forms the basis of biochemistry and molecular biology. SGUB offers a comprehensive curriculum in chemistry that offers all of the foundational premedical courses. This foundational knowledge is crucial for success in medical and healthcare professions.
2- Graduate Studies:  The Chemistry curriculum provides extensive training in Chemistry interlaced with science and humanities disciplines.  The interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum is ideal for continuing Master’s and Doctorate studies in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and related disciplines.
3- Food Chemistry and Quality Control: The food industry relies heavily on chemistry to ensure product quality, safety, and innovation. SGUB provides specialized courses and practical experiences in food chemistry and quality control, equipping students with the skills needed to work in this vital industry. Graduates can become food chemists, quality control specialists, or even food product developers.
4- Dyes Chemistry and Paints: The textile and paint industries require expertise in dyes chemistry for coloration and paints formulation. SGUB's chemistry program offers specialized courses in this area, preparing students for careers as dye chemists, paint formulation specialists, or materials scientists in related industries.
5- Pharmaceutical Industries: Chemistry is at the heart of drug discovery, development, and manufacturing. SGUB provides a strong foundation in organic and medicinal chemistry, enabling students to pursue careers in pharmaceutical research, quality control, or drug formulation.
6- Cosmetics and Perfume Industries: The cosmetics and perfume industries rely on chemistry to create innovative products. SGUB offers courses in cosmetic chemistry and fragrance chemistry, preparing students for roles in product development, quality assurance, and research within these industries.
7- Environmental Chemistry: In an era of increasing environmental concerns, SGUB educates students in environmental chemistry to address issues related to pollution, sustainability, and climate change. Graduates can work in environmental consulting firms, government agencies, or research institutions.
8- Petrochemistry - Oil and Gas: SGUB prepares students for careers in the oil and gas industry. Graduates can work in areas such as petroleum refining, chemical engineering, and energy production.

The Department of Chemistry offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program with the opportunity to concurrently engage and acquire expertise in sub-fields (Emphasis) or other fields (Minors). The following structured programs are offered:
General Chemistry – Emphasis
Industrial Chemistry – Emphasis
Biology – Minor 
Information Technology – Minor

All programs equip our graduates with the necessary background and skills to apply to international graduate programs or find good employment.  In addition, all programs include prerequisites for applying to national and international medical schools, including for succeeding  in the MCAT exam.

Assessing the Quality of Education

At SGUB, we prioritize Outcome-Based Education and Assessment. By defining clear learning outcomes in every course and for the program, we provide the platform for the development of crucial competencies for each individual student. Students can also use the learning outcomes assessments as vehicles to drive their own growth.

Undergraduate Research Assistantships
As part of our commitment to fostering a research-driven environment, we offer research assistantship opportunities to motivated undergraduate students. Research assistants work closely with faculty members on cutting-edge research projects, contributing to advancements in the field. This hands-on experience allows students to develop research skills, gain exposure to state-of-the-art methodologies, and collaborate with leading researchers. Research assistantships enhance students' academic portfolios and are potential avenues for peer-reviewed publication.

Undergraduate Student Mentoring
Our peer-mentoring program provides students with the opportunity to receive additional assistance and guidance from their fellow students who have excelled in their courses. Peer mentors are carefully selected based on their academic achievements and teaching abilities; they provide personalized tutoring sessions, offer study tips and strategies, and help students build confidence in their understanding of the subject matter. Peer mentoring is a valuable resource that promotes collaborative learning and academic success among our students.
As a recognition of their commitment to supporting their peers, students who actively participate in Undergraduate Student Mentoring receive certificates of achievement from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. These certificates serve as a testament to their academic excellence and valuable contributions to the learning community.

Undergraduate Course Assistantships
Undergraduate Course Assistants are selected based on their academic achievements and teaching abilities; they assist faculty members in delivering courses that the students had already taken and demonstrated proficiency. Undergraduate Course Assistants develop teaching and communication skills, and demonstrate a passion for fostering the growth of their fellow students.
As a recognition of their commitment, students who serve as Undergraduate Course Assistants receive certificates of achievement from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. These certificates serve as a testament their academic excellence and valuable contributions to the learning community.

Student Life
