OVERVIEW

Saint George University Medical Center(SGUMC), the primary teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine at Saint George University of Beirut(SGUB), invites applications for a full-time or part-time Cytogeneticist– Specialist Level to join its Department of Laboratory Medicine.

Job Title: Cytogenetics Specialist
Reports to: Department of Laboratory Medicine

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Duties – Cytogenetics
The successful candidate will oversee and interpret the full spectrum of constitutional and acquired cytogenetic studies, including but not limited to:
• Conventional karyotyping (prenatal, postnatal, oncology, hematologic malignancies)
• Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for constitutional and oncologic indication
• Analysis of bone marrow and peripheral blood specimens for hematologic disorders
• Prenatal cytogenetic diagnosis (amniotic fluid, chorionic villi sampling)
• Postnatal evaluation of developmental delay, congenital anomalies, and infertility
• Interpretation and reporting in accordance with international cytogenetics guidelines
• Knowledge and skills in molecular techniques including NGS is an added advantage
The candidate will ensure quality assurance, proper validation of new assays, documentation, and compliance with laboratory accreditation standards.

2. Laboratory Leadership and Quality Responsibilities
• Supervision of technologists and trainees within the Cytogenetics Unit
• Oversight of quality control and proficiency testing programs
• Development and updating of SOPs
• Participation in laboratory inspections, audits, and accreditation processes
• Implementation of new technologies and workflow optimization

Qualifications

• MD or PhD in Genetics, Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics, or related field
• Strong communication skills and ability to work within multidisciplinary academic teams
• Prior academic or teaching experience is preferred

 

Academic Appointment 

The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment at the appropriate academic rank within the Faculty of Medicine at Saint George University of Beirut, based on qualifications, experience, and academic profile. Academic evaluation and promotion will follow Faculty bylaws and policies.
